By definition, none of us want war, violence, fear, poverty or death in either our lives or our society.
But, we have these things. Therefore, someone must want them.
This is the idea behind the creation of these images: if we truly don’t want these things, why do we persist in having them and condoning their existence.
The images are fashioned after Persian miniatures. I love the small detailed richness of these miniatures and the stylized nature of their subject matter.
I use illustrations from Reader’s Digest Condensed Books published before 1981 (something that has been published 25 years ago automatically falls within the public domain). I cut up the images and combine them with other pieces and bits of paper, and use a photocopy of the definition of the image, as the background to the piece.
I hope you will find these images challenging and make you think about what it is you want in the world.
A selection of these works will be in a major exhibition at the Brisbane Institute of Arts in Brisbane, Australia in June-July 2008. |
