Handkerchief Memory Project Workshop
The Handkerchief Memory Project
is a 1 ½ -2 hour workshop designed
for family members who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s
or who have lost someone to either Alzheimer’s or some other tragedy.
This project grew out of a print
installation I am presently working on using women’s handkerchiefs to record my own lost and damaged
memories surrounding my mother’s Alzheimer’s. As part
of the installation, I had originally planned to provide handkerchiefs
for people to write on, but soon realized most people need a little
coaching in order to become comfortable thinking and writing about their
memories.
As part of this project, I have
designed a workshop where participants complete a short series of
writing exercises then record one of the favorite memories, a memory
they don’t want to lose, by writing
the memory on a linen handkerchief. When the workshop is over,
they have a memory they can keep with them wherever they go.
The class
is designed for a small group (20 participants or fewer) so each participant
has a chance to both get writing support and encouragement as well as
a chance to talk about their memories and to share their handkerchief
with the group.
The total cost for the workshop
is $350 plus my travel expenses. The
$350 includes my presentation as well as the cost of the handkerchiefs
and the writing materials.
